Qilou Old Street is one of the Chinese famous historic streets, covering an area of 80,500 square meter and spanning five key streets: Bo'ai Road, Zhongshan Road, Xinhua North Road, Deshengsha, and Jiefang Road. The oldest building, Sipai Building, dates back some 600 years to the Southern Song Dynasty.
The Qilou Old Street owes their development to booming sea trade and shipping. Buildings are usually 2-4 stories tall, with a unique design: The ground floor is set back to make space for shaded storefronts and the upper floors extend over the sidewalk, serve as living spaces. The European (Renaissance/Roman/Baroque), Nanyang, and traditional Chinese architectural elements help shape these unique Qilou buildings.
